Caritas

(Latin for charity, love, compassion, generosity, and benevolence)

Caritas is a cooperative effort of five churches in downtown Sarasota, providing emergency assistance to those who find themselves in acute financial need. Assistance may comprise of financial help with utility bills, prescription medicines, work boots, bus tickets, clothing, and food from its own pantry. Client interviews are held Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., in the trailer on the corner of Adelia Avenue and 2nd Street. Each church contributes to the Caritas Food Pantry, which is located in the First Baptist Church facility on Main Street and Adelia Avenue.

City Kids

City Kids supports children and youth in our community by providing a summer program for children and an enrichment program for teenagers. First Presbyterian Church has been involved with City Kids for the past five years by providing snacks one day a week for 150 children, ages 5 to 12, at the Newtown Recreational Center. Recently, the need has increased to more than 200 a day. There are several ways to support the City Kids outreach program: providing, preparing, and/or distributing the snacks or simply making a monetary donation.

City Kids Christmas

At Christmas, we celebrate the birth of Jesus with the children at the Newtown Recreation Center. Church members purchase and wrapping gift, FPC youth purchase items for stocking stuffers, and then we celebrate with a party for the families.

Family Promise

Did you know that one out of every four people who is homeless is a child? Or, that families with children make up 40% of the people in this country who are homeless?

Our mission is to help homeless and low-income families achieve sustainable independence. Family Promise responds by integrating educational outreach, smart programming, effective policies, and the hands-on work of thousands of volunteers. They provide food, shelter, and support services for homeless families. They provide advice and advocacy for at-risk families. They accomplish their work through independent affiliates in 39 states (and counting). Family Promise works community-by-community, utilizing existing local resources to provide for homeless families as they work to get back on their feet. These resources include available congregational spaces for sleeping and meals, donated goods, and — most importantly — volunteers. Today, they have mobilized more than 125,000 volunteers from coast to coast in our commitment to building communities and strengthening lives. (familypromisesarasota.org)
